Diverging Interests
Bo Ekman and Jose Maria Figueres discuss converging crises and diverging interests in Dubai: listen to radio interview.

Click here to listen to the interview, where they express their perspective on the converging global crises currently unfolding, on the Business Breakfast of the Dubai Eye Radio Station, a radio show that recently won the International Radio Conference’s “Breakfast Show Of The Year” award.

Bo Ekman and Rebecca Oliver made an exciting trip to the Middle East. Planned as both a Learning Journey and as an opportunity to meet new contacts in the region, they travelled to Dubai, Kuwait City and Amman in Jordan. Jose Maria Figueres, former President of Costa Rica, accompanied them in Dubai and Kuwait where they visited interesting initiatives such as the Young Arab Leaders and the new School of Government in Dubai, and met with the business, arts and policy community in Kuwait.

In Jordan, Bo and Rebecca were joined by Peder Wallenberg who will be a partner for a planned Tällberg Forum in Jordan next year.

As the global financial crisis spreads its devastation, the business community in the Gulf States are realising the full extent of their exposure. Our visit also coincided with the hottest February day in Dubai ever recorded, and a quantity of dust in Kuwait that reflected low levels of rain in the autumn and heralded a probable uncomfortably hot summer to come. No longer are the leading businesses, political and cultural residents of these countries denying the effects of global crisis in both the financial system, and the environment. The visit from the Tällberg Foundation therefore presented a very welcome opportunity to discuss these issues, and spend time in both trying to understand the depth and causes of these symptoms of our unsustainable global system.

During the visit, Bo Ekman was graciously asked to speak at an evening the Young Arab Leaders in Dubai, at a lunch for the senior Kuwait business and political community, at two evening events, in Kuwait, and in the presence of HRH Prince Raad in Jordan. On these occasions, he shared with the audience his analysis of the current global situation in a talk called “Diverging Interests, Converging Crises”.
